The Project in the Context of the Irish Power Market.

Demand v. Supply – (ref: Eirgrid Quarterly Review)

  • Peak electricity demand is forecast to increase by 24% between 2007 and 2013 from 5008MW to 6230MW.
  • At the start of 2007 around 6,737 MW of generation capacity was installed in Ireland with 6,148 MW connected to the transmission system and 589 MW connected to the distribution system. The system is expected to grow by 25% from 6403MW in 2005 to 8031MW by 2012.
  • There is currently a 330MW electricity inter connector with Northern Ireland (with power mainly flowing south) and plans to upgrade this to 500MW by 2012 and possibly installing a 400MW inter-connector with the UK (Wales) also by 2012.
  • Generation adequacy levels should be manageable up to 2009 so long as expected new generation comes on stream, availability of plant is significantly above previous levels and there are no unforeseen plant closures.
